How To Invest
How do I Invest in British Smaller Companies VCTs? (BSC VCTs)

The most common way for investing in the British Smaller Companies VCTs is when they have an Offer open. You can invest through a financial adviser who will provide advice, through an online discount broker, or directly.

As VCTs are considered high-risk investments, it is strongly advised to consult a financial adviser before making any investment decisions.

BSC  and BSC2 shares can be bought and sold through a stockbroker, just like shares of any other company listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Shares bought on the secondary market, however, do not qualify for the (up to) 30% upfront tax relief* although dividends going forward are tax free.

Contact details for the stockbroker, who can help with selling share and buying on the secondary market, are:

  • Panmure Liberum
One New Change, London, EC4M 9AF

Where can I find Key Risks?

Our key risks are outlined here and you can read our guide to key risks here.

What is the dividend re-investment scheme? (DRIS)

A Dividend Re-Investment Scheme (DRIS) is a simple and efficient way for shareholders to reinvest their dividends back into the company rather than receiving them as cash. Here’s how it works:

  • Dividends are reinvested tax-free into new shares at the most recently announced net asset value (NAV), similar to how other generalist VCTs operate.
  • The newly acquired shares also qualify for 30% income tax relief, making it a highly tax-efficient way to build up your shareholding over time.

By participating in the DRIS, investors can steadily grow their investment while enjoying significant tax benefits. It’s an alternative worth considering if you’d like to maximise the long-term potential of your dividends.

How do I switch VCT dividend reinvestment on/off?

To change your preference for how your dividends are handled—whether reinvested through the Dividend Reinvestment Scheme (DRIS) or paid out as cash—you can contact The City Partnership (the VCT registrar) directly.

Online
Visit The Hub to update your preference or request the necessary form.

Email
Contact The City Partnership at registrars@city.uk.com, and they’ll provide the form you need to complete.

Shares purchased through the DRIS are treated as new shares, which qualify for the 30% tax relief. These shares must be held for at least five years to retain the tax benefit.
